So what's up with these markers?

The old markers are left over from railroad days when the train ran through here on the way to West Jefferson, NC. The distance is measured from the station in Abingdon. The old and new markers are roughly half a mile apart. These original markers are over one hundred years old.

The new markers were created for the Virginia Creeper Trail, and measure the distance beginning at the trailhead in Abingdon, where the old Norfolk and Western steam locomotive is located, about half a mile from the original station.
